Fairfield State Hospital
Opened: 1931 Closed: 1995
Status: Abandoned, 14 years
Located: Newtown Connecticut, United States.
Built in the 1930's with a traditional colonial style, fairfield was built due to overcrowding in near by hospitals. With 16 buildings on site dedicated to psychiatric care. Officially opening in June with initially less than 500 patients in the earlier years.
By the late 1960s Fairfield housed more than 4000 patients, 20 doctors, 50 nurses, and 100 assorted other employees.
Due to deinstitutionalization there was less of a need for hospitals like Fairfield Hills. With the high cost of running underused hospitals Fairfield shut it's doors in 1995.
During its operation treatments included hydrotherapy, patient seclusion,
electric shock treatment, treatment of alcoholism and front lobotomy's.
In the first year that psychosurgery was performed over 100 patients were treated.
Tunnels, patient buildings were connected by a series of tunnels.
These tunnels were mostly used to move large groups of patients
between the buildings, especially during the winter months.
