In 1887 the original building for Jubilee was built, originally as a school for Maori girls. However the investor died and the plans never got followed through so the building sat for a few years vacant.
The building burnt down some years later, and the buildings of the current hospital was erected.
1992 came the need for a home for the aged and needy was urgently needed. The building originally meant for a Maori Girls College on 3 acres of land standing on the banks of the Wanganui River was bought and with no expense spared transformed into the new home for the aged and needy. The Inmates as they called them back in the day was responsible for the upkeep of the grounds and other jobs needed doing around the property.
In its early years there was three wards in operation. Ward One, was the lock up ward and the elderly patients who required special care for there own safety, many Lake Alice patients lived in this ward. Ward Two was the Men’s ward but eventually closed down and boarded off from the rest of the building. Ward three the Females ward back in the early days, this ward was later turned into the Continue Care ward but early 2000 were closed down. Patients were admitted to either ward one or ward three through rest homes, families or the hospital depending on there needs, weather it be full time long term care or respite care. Often most residents either returned to their home or found placements in a suitable rest home.
Jubilee had its own Kitchen, laundry, Nurses quarters, Morgue and beautiful large grounds. It was operated by Good health Wanganui. Eventually services were cut, meals would come from the main hospital and laundry services contracted out. On staff, was a range of Registered Nurses, Clinical assistants, Enrolled Nurse's, Orderly, Kitchen staff and cleaners.
In 1997 six clinical assistants left Jubilee to become Registered Nurses this was a peace of history for the hospital as it had never had that many Clinical assistants left at one time to start there training.
Jubilee was officially closed in November 2003, at the time it had 20 funded beds, with 23 beds available. The decision to why it was closed is unclear but it left the Wanganui region with no Psycho geriatric care facility’s, with patients who now need this type of service having to leave there home area to receive care in either Palmerston North or Levin.
