Designed in 1874 by New Zealand Architect Robert Lawson whom was known for his
designs in many styles but especially Gothic Revival. Completion of the hospital
 was finished during 1884. At that time it was New Zealand's largest building, The Hospital cost a total of of £78,000 to construct.

The hospital shut it's doors in 1973 due to worsening grounds and conditions which progressively
affected many buildings. Today all historical buildings have been demolished,
a few of the remaining buildings are used as a privately owned backpacker hostel.
